How the Household budget calculator works
Enter your monthly take-home income and your typical spending across common categories. This calculator adds up your expenses and subtracts them from your income to show your monthly surplus (or shortfall) and an approximate savings rate.
For irregular costs — like an annual insurance premium or car servicing — divide the yearly cost by 12 and enter that as a monthly average, so your budget reflects a typical month rather than missing occasional bills entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Many budgeting guides suggest aiming to save at least 10–20% of your income, though this varies enormously based on income, expenses and life stage. Use this as a general guide, not a rule.
