How the HECS-HELP repayment calculator works

This calculator applies the current marginal HELP repayment thresholds to your repayment income to estimate your compulsory annual repayment. Below the minimum threshold, no repayment is required; above it, the rate increases in steps as your income rises.

If you enter your current HELP debt balance, the calculator also shows an estimated balance after this year’s compulsory repayment. This doesn’t include annual indexation, which is applied separately by the ATO and can increase your balance even after a repayment.

Frequently asked questions

You start making compulsory repayments once your repayment income exceeds the minimum threshold — $69,528 for the 2026–27 income year. Repayments are then calculated on a marginal basis above that threshold.
