How the Salary after tax calculator works
This calculator estimates your take-home pay by applying the current Australian resident income tax brackets to your gross annual salary, then subtracting the Medicare levy and, if applicable, a compulsory HELP repayment.
Income tax in Australia is progressive — you pay a higher rate only on the portion of income that falls within each bracket, not on your whole salary. On top of income tax, most residents pay a 2% Medicare levy, with relief for very low incomes. If you have a HELP (HECS) debt and your income is above the compulsory repayment threshold, an additional repayment is included automatically.
The result is a general annual estimate. It assumes Australian tax residency, the standard tax-free threshold, and doesn’t account for other deductions, tax offsets, additional income, or your specific payroll withholding — your actual refund or bill at tax time can differ.
